About Us

This congregation of the church was established in the Midway community in 1954, when the McWhorter, Little and Adair families began worshipping on a limestone rock floor with a coal burning stove, in the Gillespie store building across the road from the original site. The families were acting upon a request made by the elders of the Fairfield congregation, who had conducted tent meetings in the area and had seen the need for a church in this community.

The Montgomery, Wilkerson and Lentz families were also very instrumental in establishing the congregation here at Midway. The congregation worshipped for a period of months in the home of Mrs. Ruth Lentz before starting construction of a building which was completed in 1956. The McWhorter and Montgomery families mortgaged their properties to secure the money needed to build the building and paid any additional construction costs which were incurred.

Continued growth made it necessary to construct a new auditorium and additional classroom facilities, which we began using in May of 1985. Future plans include the development of property purchased on Alabama Highway 24 to accommodate further growth of the congregation. Initially, Kyle McWhorter, Ermon Bain and Harold Lentz alternated the pulpit responsibilities. J. O. Morgan was the first minister employed on a full-time basis, followed by James Ray, Luke Williams, Kyle McWhorter, Jeff Jenkins, David Markwell, Mike Nix, Jason Macy and David Barker.

The former and current elders of the congregation include Alfred James, Bernard Thomas, Max McWhorter, Herbert Monroe, Wallace Little, Neil LeMay, Gordon Ray, Roger Thomas, Marl Fuller, Ken Nelson, Brent James, Nathan Lee, Sam Scott, and Harry James. Midway has always been a mission minded congregation, both locally and abroad. We have supported missionaries in all parts of the world, including Italy, India, Africa, Russia, the Caribbean, Haiti, Philippines, Romania and Tanzania.

The Lord has truly blessed the congregation here at Midway spiritually, numerically, and financially. May our goal be able to remain scriptural in all that we do. We ask His continued blessings in all that we do for good.
